Vehicle Tested: GWM Florid Super-Lux 1.5i VVT
GWM have been in South Africa since 2007, and have since then only offered bakkies and SUVs. Now, that’s all going to change, because they have a new kid on the block…the Florid. The Florid is GWM’s first stab at the passenger car market, and it’s not half bad.
The Florid is powered by a 1.5 liter petrol engine which produces 77kW and 138Nm. This little power plant is fantastic because it is big enough to be zippy around town and a cruiser on the open road, but still small enough to sip very little petrol.
First impressions of the Florid are good. I can’t decide if it is a cute car, a handsome car or a sporty looking car. I think that’s because it is a combination of all of the above. Moms will love it because it is cute, dads will love it because it doesn’t look soft, and won’t water down their manly image and your children will probably end up naming it. If I had one, I’d probably call it Bob.
The interior of the Florid is littered with toys. There are creature comforts such as a CD/MP3 radio, air con, electric windows and mirrors, power steering, central locking and a whole lot more.
The boot is big enough to swallow shopping, school bags, and most other things your family might need to chuck in.
Of course, all these awesome features don’t really help in the event of an accident, that’s why GWM have thought of your safety too. The Florid is fitted with duel airbags, ABS and EBD. To make parking easier, they have installed a reverse radar into the back bumper, which helps you pop your car into tight parking spaces by making a beeping sound which speeds up the closer you get to an obstacle.
Driving around, the Florid is pleasant in town as it is easy to maneuver through traffic and parking lots. All round visibility is good, and thanks to the reverse radar, painful tasks such as parallel parking are a whole lot easier. What more could you want from a little car?
The Florid is backed by a 3year/100 000km warranty, and a dedicated sales team. If you are in the market for a small car, remember that the Florid comes with all the bells and whistles for under R110 000.
