Mahindra's Budget SUV

Vehicle tested: Mahindra Scorpio VLX Automatic

I have thought long and hard about this, and I’m sorry, I have to be perfectly honest. The Mahindra Scorpio is cheap! A brand new 7 seater SUV, with all the bells and whistles for under R225 000. Not half bad if you ask me.

The Scorpio has just recently undergone a facelift which has seen numerous minor changes both inside and outside the vehicle. As for the styling, the best way I can think to describe it is…GI Joe Teletubby. I know there is no such thing, but the Mahindra has an aggressive undercurrent, but with it’s big googly eye headlamps and rounded edges, it almost looks cuddly.

One highlight about driving the Scorpio is the driving position. You sit incredibly high up, which is fantastic for round town manoeuvring because you can see exactly where the curbs are, whether you’re in your parking spot and so on. The Scorpio is powered by a common-rail 2.2 litre ‘mHAWK’ diesel engine which produces 86 kW of grunt and 270 Nm of Torque. The 2.2 VLX Scorpio comes in an automatic.

The ride is, don’t get me wrong, spongy. This means that the Scorpio ‘absorbs’ all bumps and potholes with relative ease. I wouldn’t recommend chucking the Scorpio into corners as there is noticeable body roll. Having said that, at least if you need to stop in a hurry, the Scorpio has ABS, and if you don’t stop in time there are driver and passenger airbags.
As for the interior, there is the usual list of kit such as CD/MP3 radio, electric windows/mirrors, powering steering, a very good air-con and other odds and ends.
You can have your Scorpio in either a 7 seater or 8 seater. I have to mention though that the 7 seater is made up of 2 individual seats in the second row and a bench in the third row, which accommodates 3 passengers. This set up means that there is very little boot space, and if you want any, you need to drop the third row of seats. Dropping the third row means you only have the 2 individual seats in the second row left, and can therefore only seat four people in the vehicle. So honestly, seriously consider the 8 seater because it has 2 rows of bench seats, and if you drop the third row, you will still have a completely functional 5 seater.

The Scorpio comes with a 3 year/100 000km warranty.

The Scorpio might very well not be everyone’s cup of tea, and even though it grew on me, I’m still not sure if it’s mine either. That being said, if you have ever, or are considering one, you will have a tough time finding better value for money.
