Life is full of challenges…and some of them you want to do.

I recently spent two days behind the scenes of SABC 3’s Car Quest. I got to see how the whole program was put together, and how an episode was filmed form beginning to end. Over and above this, I spent the two days in the presence of Alex Parker, whose an accomplished motoring journalist and one the show’s presenters.
Calling him an accomplished journalist is a bit of an insult, he’s an all round fantastic person. One who knows exactly what he’s talking about and doesn’t bend the truth in any fashion or form…hence the whole I30 saga. A car I still need to drive…oops.

Anyway, he’s written a book. It’s called, “25 Cars To Drive Before You Die.” And as you can imagine, it’s 25 of the greatest cars to drive.
I recently watched a movie called Julie & Julia. Complete chick flick through and through. It’s about love, romance, beautiful country settings (sort of), and dare I say it…cooking. Now, here’s the thing about the movie. One woman loves the other woman’s cook book so much she decides to prepare every dish in it in less than a year. As she does so, she writes about it on her blog, and gets a huge following, and, and, and….
I have a blog, and now I have a book full of motoring porn, and it is has a challenge attached to it. And one I’d love nothing more than to do.

So here are the cars listed in Alex’s book:
Aston Martin DBS
Alfa Romeo Brera Coupé
Subaru Impreza WRX STi
Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Land Rover S11
Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG
Opel Astra OPC
Audi S8
Bentley Continental GT
Mini Cooper S (1964) – and the new on for the hell of it
BMW M3
Porsche Caymen S
Aston Martin DB9
Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG
Mazda MX-5
Lamborghini Miura – this will be more than a challenge, I think there’s like only one in the country
Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano
Cadillac STS
Birkin S3
Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT
Audi R8 – oh yes!!!
Ford GT40
Range Rover Sport
Jaguar XKR Convertible
Rolls-Royce Phantom
These are the 25 cars I will try to drive before I die, and hopefully along the way I will be able to create my own list. I know that before I can compile such a list, I will need to mature, and learn to appreciate cars for what they are, and not necessarily what they can do. At the moment, my list would be a bunch of GTIs in different colours.

So Mr Parker, I accept your challenge…even if it kills me.
